The Heritage Library was abuzz on February 8 and 9 as some 150 students of Holy Faith Convent, Couva visited to conduct research on Trinidad and Tobago’s dance and dance pioneers.

The 75 Form three students, who visited on February 8, researched the contributions of Trinidad and Tobago’s award-winning dance icons, including Beryl McBurnie, Jean Coggins, Astor Johnson, Julia Edwards and Molly Ahye. The form Four and Six pupils, who visited the following day, examined various dance forms, including limbo and maypole.

Accompanied by their teachers, the curious youngsters were intrigued and inspired by what they learned while perusing books, newspapers archives and NALIS’ online catalogue for their school project. The materials they reviewed, which the teachers noted are not available at the school’s library, point to the fact that dances in Trinidad and Tobago have been influenced by our rich cultural heritage.

The Heritage Library’s collection consists of rare books, newspaper clippings, photographs, calendars, pamphlets, stamps, flyers, films, records, tapes, research papers, artefacts and memorabilia on and about Trinidad and Tobago. Persons of all ages can learn about our leaders (past and present), sporting heroes, authors and more by perusing the collection.

According to Grace Achoy, Director, Heritage Library Division, the library’s collection and programmes are all part of the Division’s effort to present the society to itself and to enrich the public’s understanding of our history, culture and stories. The Heritage Library proudly serves to generate, initiate and facilitate important local research.
