An “Open Mike” programme dubbed, “Slamming @ the Library” is conducted every third Friday in the month jointly by the Port of Spain Young Adult, National Library, and the Circle of Poets of Trinidad and Tobago. This programme attracts creative works in the styles of rap, rapso, calypso, gospel and poetry. Participants, mainly young adults, are required to perform an item from any poetry book in the National Library, as well as their own original composition.

At a recent edition of the programme, Marylyn Pantin of the Circle of Poets told the young people that there are ways with dealing with their feelings of hate, love, joy, sorrow, anger. She suggested that one of the ways is by writing it out and expressing what is written in some form of oral tradition. Diane Simeon, librarian of the POS Young Adult Library, took the opportunity to discuss the different types of poetry and other services available offered at the Library.

The next session of “Slamming @ The Library” is carded for May 14, 2004 in the Audio Visual Room, National Library Building from 3:00pm to 5:00pm.
