The National Library and Information System Authority (NALIS) ran its first Vacation Internship Programme (NLVIP) for the Children of its staff from July 29 to August 23, 2024. The programme targeted persons between the ages 17 – 21 who were awaiting CSEC results or pursuing CAPE Level I or II, or a Diploma in any area of study.
A total of 12 persons participated in the Internship programme. These participants were assigned to public libraries both in Tobago and Trinidad, the Heritage Library Division, Special Libraries as well as the Facilities Management, Projects, Research and Planning, and the Public Relations and Marketing Departments of NALIS.
By this programme, NALIS offered the young adults practical exposure to library operations, facilitated skills development and career exploration and fostered a deeper understanding into the world of work.
In addition to placement in libraries/departments, the participants were provided with structured mentoring and personal development sessions. These included sessions on topics like: Career Management and Mentoring; Office Etiquette and Communications; Health and Safety in the Workplace; Procurement Processes and Personal Financial Planning. Additionally, they received a tour of the National Library of Trinidad and Tobago and a tour to the Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
On the last day of the internship, participants had to deliver a presentation on a pre-determined topic.
Many thanks to the Chairman of the Board of NALIS and the Executive for their vision, the Human Resources Division for its successful execution, all Divisional and Departmental Heads who supported the initiative and all staff who ensured its smooth implementation. This programme is expected to be implemented again in 2025.
