In addition to the independence themed vacation camps and exhibitions hosted by libraries across the country to mark Trinidad and Tobago’s Diamond Jubilee, the National Library and Information System Authority (NALIS) presented its free Afternoon Concert Series at the Abercromby Street Arcade of the National Library in Port of Spain. The series commenced on August 9 and was held every Tuesday until August 23.

The first concert featured performances by the La Brea Police Youth Club Band. The young musicians and singers delivered renditions of vintage calypso, soca, reggae and gospel hits. In addressing the appreciative audience, WPC Jasmin Vesprey David, chairperson of the Youth Club, said the band started with donated instruments and practised out of the Vessigny Secondary School’s music room before moving to her home. She said that the club and band are growing from strength to strength and will continue to impact the community of La Brea and by extension, Trinidad and Tobago.

On August 16, in front of a sizable crowd, the Trinidad and Tobago Inmates’ Band, together with officers performed their extensive repertoire of local, regional and international hits. Onlookers danced to the melodious voices and instruments.

Held on August 23, the last in the concert series featured students of the Young Maestros and the Francois Girls College Steel Orchestras. The students, dressed in red to mark the occasion, played to their audience’s content. The youngest pannist, Kaidon Gibbs, who was just a few inches taller than his instrument, mesmerised the audience. Also performing at the afternoon’s event was spoken word artiste, Rochelle Rawlins.
