In commemoration of African Emancipation Day 2026, the National Library and Information System Authority (NALIS) hosted its lecture titled, “Knowledge is Power” and unveiled an exhibition: “Cultural Reassertion: Reconnecting With Self” at the National Library on July 22, 2026.
The profound and thought-provoking lecture was delivered by Dr David Muhammad, well known sociologist, author, speaker, lecturer and chairman of the Board of NALIS. Dr Muhammad’s discourse visited the Ancient Africa – The age of great civilization and knowledge; Medieval Africa – The age of Great Kingdoms and Empires; The Era of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade – The Slave Trade Period; The Colonial Period – The age of European Colonization and finally the Independence or Post-Colonial Period – Modern Africa. Muhammad’s also shared the names of the great inventors who were of African descent.
The other highlight of the evening was the poetic performances by Eintou Pearl Springer. Her final piece: “Loving The Skin I’m”, called for audience participation, which they delivered with enthusiastic applause.
Following this performance, the sizable audience moved to the Rotunda to witnessed the unveiling of the exhibition. The exhibition features books, cravings, images and information boards.
In delivering her opening remarks, Beverly Ann Williams, Executive Director (Ag) said, “Today, cultural reassertion is about reclaiming that inheritance with pride. It is about reconnecting with ourselves – not only by celebrating our African heritage through music, dance, history, art and traditional dress, but by understanding the values, history and wisdom that continue to shape who we are as a people.” She continued: “When we reconnect with our history, we strengthen our identity.”
The exhibition runs until August 20.
