The National Library and Information System Authority (NALIS) will host its fourth edition of Latin Nights from October 9 to 19, 2024 at the National Library, Abercromby Street, Port of Spain. Latin Nights is NALIS’ celebration of Latin-Ibero American culture, folklore, art, cuisine, history, literature and films.
Through this event, NALIS hopes to raise public awareness regarding Latin-Ibero American culture, bridge linguistic and cultural divides, create a greater understanding among communities, increase an interest in the speaking of Spanish as a first foreign language, and facilitate the cultural development of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
This year, through their embassies in Port of Spain, countries participating are Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Spain and Venezuela. Following the opening night, each night, a different country will display an aspect of its culture, whether through dance, song, film or art.
At the official opening, remarks will be presented by the Honourable Symon de Nobriga, Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister – Communications; Senator the Honourable Dr Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs; His Excellency Wellington Bencosme, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic; Neil Parsanlal, Chairman of the Board of NALIS and Paula Greene, Executive Director for NALIS. A main feature for the evening will be the launch of the Latin Nights4 Exhibition, consisting of books and memorabilia from the participating countries and the opening of the Peruvian photographic exhibition titled: "Shipibo-Konibo - Retratos de mi Sangre" by the Peruvian photographer David Diaz. These exhibitions are mounted on the Ground Floor of the National Library.
Latin Nights was first staged in 2017 and has garnered significant interest from Latin-Ibero American countries and the public alike. Since the first edition of Latin Nights, NALIS has established a Spanish Book Collection at the National Library; hosted Spain’s Secretary of State for International Cooperation; collaborated with the Ministry of Education and embassies to establish a Spanish Language Conversation Club and successfully hosted Spanish language film festivals and Spanish Language Day public discussions.
