On January 13 the Port-of-Spain Young Adult (POSYA) Library in collaboration with artist Richard Rampersad unveiled its very first exhibit for 2017: “The Ambivalence of Emotion.”

The art exhibit will run until January 20 at the National Library of Trinidad and Tobago, located corner Hart and Abercromby Streets, Port of Spain.

The paintings on display are indicative of complex human emotions expressed by young women and victims of domestic violence, gender inequality and other social ills. Many of the portraits capture curious dispositions -- the measure of which depends on the viewer’s own perspective.

The exhibition is intended to showcase the importance of visual art and its unique ability to educate us and communicate aspects of social and cultural knowledge. According to Jesse-Ann Bernard, Library Assistant II at the POSYA library, “it’s all part of NALIS’ continued effort to facilitate cultural, educational and social development, through its many library and information services.”

Rampersad, who teaches Art at Tranquillity Government Secondary school, is thrilled to share his contemporary Caribbean works with the public. Techniques used in his portraits include finger painting and bleeding. His pieces are available for viewing Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Saturday till 4 p.m.

Upcoming exhibits at the National Library will feature displays on Carnival, Latin America, first-time authors and more. Exhibits are free to the public. For more information on upcoming activities at your library, see “Programmes and Events” at www.nalis.gov.tt
