Nalis’ 2010 Calendar ‘Flavours of our Heritage’ is now available to members of the public following its successful launch on December 18, 2009, at the National Library of Trinidad and Tobago.

The 2010 calendar features some of the flavours and tastes that reflect and shape our heritage, celebrate our diversity and express our oneness. The information presented in ‘Flavours of our Heritage’ is enlightening, teaching that many of the foods we know and love today have been influenced by Indian, African, Persian, French, English, and Italian cultures.

These cultures have helped give birth to dishes such as Coo coo and Callaloo, Bake and Shark, Pelau, Roti, Crab and Dumpling, Sancoche, Barfi and many traditional sweets like Toolum and Bene Balls. An exhibition showcasing the colourful pages of the calendar has been mounted at the Atrium, National Library.

At the launch, journalist, researcher and historian, Louis B Homer provided the audience with an interesting background on the many local foods, while Phillip Murray (Black Sage) delighted the audience with the many calypsoes written and sung on local foods.

The Calendar, ‘Flavours of our Heritage’was preceded by ‘Games we used to Play’ (2009) and the award-winning ‘Folklore Characters’ in 2008.

The NALIS 2010 calendar is currently available at the National Library at a cost $35.00 for registered NALIS library users and $50.00 for non registered persons. Calendars will soon be available at other Public Libraries.
