Dear Editor,

FREE INTERNET ACCESS AT ALL PUBLIC LIBRARIES

In response to the letter written to the Editor entitled “Turn On Computers At New Library,” the National Library and Information System Authority (NALIS), the organization responsible for the administration of library and information services in Trinidad and Tobago, wishes to advise that since 1998, public library service points in Trinidad and Tobago have been fitted with computers and offer free internet access to the public.

The public is allotted half an hour, on a rostered basis to surf the net. NALIS’ 25 service points offer computer print outs and photo copying services at a minimal fee.

NALIS is working assiduously towards increasing the number of computers at each service point. The new National Library Building will have approximately 200 computers available for use by the public. These computers will be located in the Children’s Library, the Young Adult Library, the Adult Library and the Heritage Library. NALIS has been at the forefront of technological development in the library and information industry in the region and conducts training for its local and Caribbean library personnel. We encourage the public to view our website at www.nalis.gov.tt and make use of our online catalogue (OPAC) to see what material is available at our service points.

Sincerely,

DEBBIE GOODMAN
