The new Cedros Public Library to serve over 10,000 residents from Cedros and surrounding areas was officially opened on Friday April 12, 2002 by the Minister in the Ministry of Public Administration and Information, the Honourable Mr. Fitzgerald Hinds. Also in attendance at the official opening were His Excellency Mr. Tom Bearss, the Acting High Commissioner for Canada, Anna Smart representing the Member of Parliament for Point Fortin, members of the Canadian’s Women’s Group, members of the Friends of the Library Group, principals, teachers, students of the Cedros Composite School (where the stationary mobile library bus is housed) and the Cedros Government Anglican School.

Minister Hinds, in delivering the feature address congratulated the National Library and Information System Authority for expanding its service to the Cedros area. He said that although space at the new facility is a premium, readers will be able to search the Internet for the most up to date information on any subject under the sun. He added that the people of Cedros, like persons in other areas served by NALIS’ public libraries, are now part of the information revolution.

The Government, he concluded, is committed to working with NALIS in developing a learning society, knowing that the future of society is dependent on the intellectual food that is fed to the citizenry. The government is also committed to expanding and improving the library and information services of the country so that all citizens can have access to opportunities for reading and learning within a reasonable distance from their homes and work places.

The High Commission For Canada, the Canadian Women’s Group and the Friends of the Library were instrumental in making the “Mobile Library”, books and computer available to the people of Cedros.
