EXPLORING HISTORICAL RESOURCES ON TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO: THE LIVES AND WORK OF TWO INDO-TRINIDADIANS BY H. JOY NORMAN

Title:            The Lives and Work of Two Indo-Trinidadians.
Author:        H. Joy Norman.
Summary:

In this publication, the author tells the story through the recollection and documentation of essays, photos, letters, poems and songs while exploring the lives and careers of two descendants  of Indentured Indian immigrants who resided and worked in north Trinidad. These were her maternal grandfather, the Reverend Samuel Ramsaran and Leslie Sankarsingh, her father, who was an entrepreneur and poet. The book examines in the first part, the background of Reverend Samuel Ramsaran and his contributions to the labourers, while part two outlines the path of Leslie Sankarsingh and his way of life. The life and labour of these two Indo-Trinidadians, as well as many of their contemporaries, made a substantial contribution to the nation of Trinidad and Tobago.

The context of Trinidad’s history of colonisation and Indian Indentureship sets the tone in which the two lives and backgrounds are explored. With the arrival of indentured labourers from India between 1845 and 1917 to help with the labour shortages, the population of Trinidad and Tobago became made up of about 35% people of East Indian heritage. Many of them stayed and settled after Indentureship.

Additionally, the author relates her family’s history against the backdrop of the work of the Canadian Missionaries in Trinidad including the setting up of schools in the rural areas e.g. Cumuto, Biche and Cunaripo. She highlights the endeavours by the Missionaries to encourage religious conversion. The effects/impacts of these efforts are regaled as the author describes the reaction of her Hindu family members to the introduction of Presbyterianism.
