ELSD RECOMMENDED RESOURCES FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS MATHEMATICS - STD 3

The Mathematics component of the Ministry of Education’s new Primary Curriculum is responsive to the realities of a 21st century global society. The guiding principles of curriculum content are based upon the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards, with emphasis on the student’s ability to explore, discover, analyse and apply Mathematics, to model and to solve real world problems (NCTM.org). Additionally, the NCTM standards of problem solving, reasoning, communication, representation and connections direct content delivery. Core competencies are developed within Number, Statistics, Measurement and Geometry strands.

Teaching and learning focuses on the reduction of Maths anxiety in students and the transition from Primary to Secondary School by using an integrative approach to the following:-

  • The development of core mathematical concepts and skills
  • The development of appropriate characteristics to assist in facilitating life-long learning and higher order thinking skills
  • A pedagogical approach that utilizes a variety of student-centred teaching techniques and strategies
  • An Assessment Framework that focuses on assessment for learning, continuous assessment, as well as summative evaluation.

Instructional programs address the development of Mathematical Proficiency by focusing on the following five integrated components:

  • Conceptual understanding: comprehension of mathematical concepts, operations and relations
  • Procedural fluency: skill in carrying out procedures flexibly, accurately, efficiently
  • and appropriately
  • Strategic competence: ability to formulate, represent and solve mathematical problems
  • Adaptive reasoning: capacity for logical thought, reflection, explanation and justification
  • Productive disposition: habitual inclination to see Mathematics as sensible, useful
  • and worthwhile, coupled with a belief in diligence and one’s own efficacy.

Suggested Teaching and Learning outcomes through Student engagement include the following:

  • The ability to think creatively, critically and strategically
  • To structure, organize, process and communicate information 
  • To enjoy and master intellectual challenges
  • To create models and predict outcomes
  • To conjecture, to justify and verify
  • To seek out patterns and generalizations
  • To estimate and calculate with precision, and understand when both are appropriate.
