ELSD RECOMMENDED RESOURCES FOR CAPE BIOLOGY

The Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Biology syllabus comprises two Units each with three compulsory Modules. Whilst each Module in each Unit is independent, together they form a coherent course of study. According to CXC, each Module will require at least 50 hours of teaching and study time.  Each Unit forms a discrete package for certification and is certified separately. Units with accompanying Modules and Sub-titles for CAPE Biology are detailed as follows:

 

UNIT 1. Biomolecules, Reproduction and Development

Module 2. Genetics, Variation and Natural Selection

Module 3. Reproductive Biology

 

UNIT 2. Bioenergetics, Bio-systems and Applications

Module 1. Bioenergetics and Conservation

Module 2. Bio-systems Maintenance

Module 3. Applications of Biology

 

The syllabus generally aims to:

  • Enable students to acquire a body of knowledge and develop an understanding of biological concepts and principles
  • Promote an understanding of how new information can contribute to the reformulation or rejection of earlier models and concepts
  • Recognise the scope of Biology at all levels from the molecular level to that of body systems and entire ecosystems
  • Facilitate the development of the ability to communicate scientific information in a logical and structured manner
  • Develop an understanding of the scientific method and the ability to apply it to solving problems, both in academic and non-academic settings
  • Assist in the development of critical thinking, analytical, and practical skills
  • Encourage students to appreciate the impact of biological knowledge on society and its relevance to ethical, economic, environmental and technological issues
  • Develop the ability to apply biological knowledge and skills to relevant Caribbean situations and issues
  • Develop the ability to work independently and collaboratively with others
  • Promote an appreciation of the significance and limitations of science in relation to social and economic development; and,
  • Promote the integration of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) tools and skills.

 

NOTE: For the Student, as there is greater emphasis on the application of scientific concepts and principles, there is greater understanding of some of the basic principles of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, and, the inter-relationship of these subjects. There is further development of long-term transferable skills of ethical conduct, teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking, innovation, and communication. The student is further provided with a solid foundation that allows them to pursue studies in Life Sciences and related professions at the post-secondary level.

On completion of this course of study, students attain greater understanding of and appreciation for the concepts of life at all levels and greater reverence and respect for life. They will have attained important knowledge about protecting, sustaining, conserving and improving the quality of life in the ecosphere. Finally, students acquire the right foundation if wishing to pursue careers in the biological, environmental, agricultural, medical, paramedical and applied sciences fields.
