Her Excellency Bengü Yiğitgüden, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey paid a courtesy visit to Paula Greene, NALIS’ Executive Director (Ag.) at the National Library on February 24.
During the visit the two discussed possible areas for collaboration between NALIS and the embassy and the twinning of national libraries given their mutual interest in the promotion of literature, cultures, information and the sharing of knowledge.
Also at the meeting the ambassador committed to donating to NALIS literature about Turkey, written in English and the hosting of an exhibition and other programmes which will serve to bring the people of both countries closer, especially given the fact that the Turkish embassy was established here since 1972. Ambassador Yiğitgüden also revealed that the ties between the two countries go further back as Trinidad and Tobago soldiers served in Turkey during the World War I.
Over the years NALIS has collaborated with a number of embassies and foreign missions to promote diversity and develop an appreciation of the beauty of other cultures.
