Every year in June, NALIS hosts this competition for standard V students throughout the country. Students are quizzed in five categories: books and authors, spelling, social studies, verbal ability and general knowledge. The objectives of the competition are to provide a useful activity for Secondary Entrance Examination (SEA) students in the term after the examination, to promote the library as a center for recreation and information, to expose children to a core collection of books through the books and authors category, and to encourage reading in young children and create life-long readers.
The main prize is the Lynette Hutchinson Challenge Trophy. This trophy was donated by the library Association of Trinidad and Tobago, on behalf of the late Lynette Hutchinson, former director of library services. Students will also receive book prizes.
