“Libraries are your mind’s best friend!” So says the Honourable Fitzgerald Hinds, acting Attorney General and Member of Parliament for Laventille West at the formal opening of the National Library and Information System Authority’s (NALIS) Beetham Gardens Community Library on Friday February 22, 2019.

Sharing his personal experience Minister Hinds also told the audience that while studying in England his wallet was full, not with money, but with library cards, having obtained membership from eight libraries he was able to access most the material he required.  Speaking directly to the children and young adults present, he asked them to make good use of the library facilities available to expand their minds.

Catherine Romain, NALIS’ Executive Director said that the opening of the Beetham Gardens Community Library signals NALIS’ commitment to ensuring equitable access to library and information services to the community of Beetham Gardens as to all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.  She said that the library, which is located at the Joint Community Services Centre, Beetham Gardens, will support the already established programmes of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF). She too asked the residents to take advantage of the facilities and services on offer. Opening hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and on Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Also delivering remarks at the opening were the Honourable Stuart Young, Minister of National Security,  Minister Communications and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister; Adrian Leonce, Member of Parliament for East/Morvant and Neil Parsanlal, Chairman of the Board of NALIS.

The Beetham Gardens Community Library is the second co-located library opened by NALIS. The first was opened at the Mt Hope/Mt. Lambert Community Centre on January 25, 2019 in collaboration with the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts.

The co-location of libraries, which represents a new paradigm in the delivery of library services, involves the setting up of customer-friendly libraries in partnership with key stakeholders; putting libraries at the heart of the community.
