The NALIS Debe Public Library has been relocated from Wellington Road to 1054 S.S. Erin Road, Debe. The library occupies the ground level of the building which also houses the offices of the National Infrastructure Development Company Limited (NIDCO) Community Outreach Centre, Debe.
From July 14 to 31, children between the ages seven to 12 attended the library’s first vacation camp at its new location. At the camp, the children engaged in literacy building activities, workshops, lectures as well as recreational activities, with the main focus on reading and encouraging this habit. These were facilitated by staff as well as personnel from the Environmental Management Authority, Childline and Fire Services. During August 2014, the reading challenge which began during the camp period continues. Children who submit book reviews, for items borrowed at the library, receive rewards for each submission.
Computer classes are conducted for members of the public (on a-one to-one basis and in group sessions) and after school activities include craft, science experiments, movies, book club meetings, book talks, poetry sessions, games and storytelling. The library also hosts exhibitions, lectures, workshops and educational activities on international and religious observance.Library staff conducts school visits to pre schools and primary schools in the area, facilitating educational-themed activities.
The Debe Public Library has a collection of 16,131 books and a growing multimedia collection of 1,048 items which consists of audio books, DVDs and CDs.Library hours are Mondays to Fridays: 8:30 am - 6:00 pm and Saturdays: 8:30 am - 4:00 pm.
