IERE HIGH SCHOOL WINS LIBRARY QUIZ

 The challenge trophy was presented to the Iere High School team of Adita Balkaransingh, Lexine Roberts and Sophia Brewster. Each member of the team also walked away with a Jansport bag, an IPod Touch and fiction and non-fiction books. Their school received a book voucher courtesy RIK Services Limited valued at $2000.

They competed against teams from Presentation College (Chaguanas), Cowen Hamilton Secondary School and Lakshmi Girls High. These teams advanced as finalists following the preliminaries and semi-finals round of competition held at libraries around the country.

Questions were presented to the finalists in the following categories: library skills, culture, history, general knowledge of Trinidad and Tobago (including questions relevant to the fiftieth anniversary of independence) and on the novel Minty Alley by CLR James.

To separate the second and third places, a tie-breaker question was posed to the pupils of the Presentation College and Cowen Hamilton Secondary. Presentation College won the tie-breaker and placed second, Cowen Hamilton placed third and Lakshmi Girls took fourth place.

The other prizes were: Second place - books, digital cameras and a book voucher for the school valued at $1500. Third place - books, MP3 players, and a book voucher for the school valued at $1000. Fourth place - books, Nab It games and a book voucher for the school valued at $500. All book vouchers were provided courtesy RIK services Limited.

The National Young Adult Library Quiz Competition, targeted to form two secondary school students, is designed to promote recreational reading and develop life-long readers; enhance literacy skills; increase general knowledge; promote local authors; and, through the library skills component, develop participants’ proficiency in the use of a variety of library resources
