A LIBRARY FOR ST. JUDE'S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

We are pleased to advise of the opening of a NALIS library at the St Jude’s School for Girls, 30 Circular Road, Belmont on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.

This is NALIS’ third library in a correctional institution. The opening is in keeping with our mandate “to provide a national information service for the benefit of the physically disadvantaged and persons in institutions. [NALIS Act 19 of 1998 Section 4(m)] Similar libraries were opened at the Youth Training Centre (YTC) in 2008 and the Women’s Prison in September 2009.

The library at St. Jude’s School for Girls will provide the traditional service of books, periodicals and multimedia. It will also offer Information Communication Technology (ICT) through the teaching of information and computer literacy. Additionally, in order to improve literacy skills of the girls, NALIS plans to introduce a programme of teaching basic literacy in partnership with the Adult Literacy Tutors Association (ALTA).
