Heritage Library Division, NALIS invites you to attend and cover their 2009 Emancipation Programme, “Emancipate Yourself from Mental Slavery” featuring the works of CLR James; A Man Beyond Boundaries on Friday July 24, 2009 at the National Library, Hart and Abercromby Streets, Port of Spain, 6:00 p.m.

The programme features: Feature speaker for the evening, Master Artist, Chief Ifa Oje Won Yomi Abiodun, LeRoy Clarke, presenting his paper, “A Brief for the Artist in General: Remembering CLR James". Readings from CLR James’ “Minty Alley”; a cultural feature and the opening of an exhibition on the life of CLR James and Emancipation.

In keeping with NALIS’ objective, “to nurture an interest in the heritage and the culture of Trinidad and Tobago by highlighting events of national importance” the theme was selected. The theme bears upon the fact that true emancipation extends beyond the physical shackles. It is necessary that we as a people emancipate ourselves mentally from slavery. C.L.R. James is the epitome of a man who chose to go beyond the boundaries of mental enslavement.
