Winston Spree Simon was born in 1930. From as early as 1937 he was involved with a group of boys making music on the street for Carnival, Emancipation Day and all celebrations. By 9 he was lead drummer. By Allied Victory Day, May 8th 1945, when steelbands took to the streets, 15 year old Spree was a lead member of the John John Band, now going by the name Destination Tokyo. In 1946, Spree went into history as the first man to play a tune on the steelband in public as a ping pong player for Johannesburg Fascinators. He has been remembered with monuments and the nation's highest awards. |
