The bat is a less known traditional
mas, when compared to others like the Pierrot and Robber. But for Edgar
Whiley the Bat was everything. Born in 1914, Whiley was involved
in Carnival from a very young age,and played other traditional mas characters, including
the Jab Jab, Red Indian, Pierrot Grenade and Burrokeet, but it was for
his portrayal of the bat that he is best remembered. He played Batman
for over 60 years, perfecting his dance backed by a neighbour's guitar.
He participated in many a bat dance war against other bat bands. During his years as an active
mas player, he shared his expertise in the field, and worked alongside
Aubrey Adams, Alyson Brown and the Folk Performers. He was a regular at
the annual Ole Mas revival Viey la Cou at Queen's Hall. During the days he worked as
a dental technician, and at night, especially around Carnival time, he
performed his bat dance, in costumes he designed and made with his own
hands.
