Cyril Duprey was born in St. Joseph on March 3, 1897 and educated at the St. Joseph Government School. He lived in the USA between 1920 and 1936 during which time he established the United Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. He returned to Trinidad in 1936 at which time he founded the Colonial Life Insurance Company Limited; the first locally owned insurance business. He founded the Colonial Fire Insurance Company in 1958. He assumed the position of the first Chairman of the National Commercial Bank in 1970. During his career he was also Director and President of the Building and Loan Association; Director, E.P. Gibbs Ltd.; Director and President of the Trinidad Co-operative Bank Ltd.; Director of Clyde Hutcheon and Co. He was a member of the Maple, Kosmos, Queen's Park, and Arima Race Clubs and had a wide interest in athletics and racing. One of the stands at the Queen's Park Oval is named after him. He died on September 2nd 1988. |
