Born in Point Fortin in 1937,
Allan Gervais first played pan with Morning Stars which later became know
as Intruders.
By the age of 14 he had co-founded the Tropical Harmony steelband with
fellow pan enthusiast Earl Rodney.
It was then that he turned his interest and talents to the tuning of pans.
He was a great admirer of Ellie Mannette who was at the time making waves
in pan tuning innovation.
In 1961, the band moved to Port of Spain to fulfil contracts with the
US Naval Base. They also played for several of Port of Spain's most popular
nightclubs at the time, including The Pepperpot, the French Line Club
and Penthouse.
Living in Port of Spain gave Gervais the opportunity to study music under
the tutelage of Melville Robin. He also learned to tune the full range
of pans.
With the departure of Earl Rodney and the subsequent migration of several
of the band's key members, Tropical Harmony dissolved.
Undaunted, he continued his work as a pan tuner and worked in both North
and South Trinidad until his death.
