The libraries under NALIS are grouped under the following headings:

Public Libraries

The purpose of public libraries is to provide efficient and reliable access to information to the public, using state of the art technology. Public Libraries also encourage the use of information, and promotes the reading habit.

Public Libraries in Trinidad are managed by the Public Libraries Division, located at the NALIS building in Port of Spain. The Division oversees the following libraries:

Port of Spain Adult Library - This library caters to the adult population.

Port of Spain Young Adult Library - This library caters to young people between the ages of 13 and 17 years.

Port of Spain Children's Library - This library caters to children from birth to the age of 12 years.

Heritage Library - This is a reference resource of valuable Heritage material. It seeks to collect, organise and disseminate all information about our nation's diverse ethnic groups and cultures. It acquires and preserves for posterity, all print and non-print material relevant to our heritage. This includes also, primary sources of orally transmitted knowledge.

The major public library in the south is the San Fernando Carnegie Free Library. It provides services to persons of all ages.

The division also manages twenty one branch libraries and three bookmobile services serving the outlying areas. Click here to view a complete listing of all our public libraries.

The Tobago Libraries are coordinated by the Library Services Department of the Tobago House of Assembly, through its regional headquarters situated in Scarborough. The public libraries in Tobago are:

The Scarborough Regional Library

The Roxborough Branch Library

The Charlotteville Branch Library

Book Van Schools Service

The public libraries in Tobago serve persons of all age groups.

School Libraries

The purpose of school libraries is to support the curriculum of the schools in which they reside.  There are libraries in many of the primary and secondary schools. They all fall under the umbrella of the Educational Library Services Division located in the NALIS building in Port of Spain.

Special Libraries

Special libraries are found in government departments and agencies. Their purpose is to provide researchers and staff of the organisation with the specialised information they need to carry out their research. The collections in these types of libraries are highly specialised and focused on a particular field, and may or may not be accessible to the public, depending on the type of organisation.

Digital Library

Still in its early stages, the Digital Library will comprise images of original Trinidad and Tobago documents which are significant to our heritage. We have begun with sample images of original Slave Deeds and documents from the Sir Learie Constantine collection.
