History:

From as early as 1961, library personnel recognised the need for a Branch Library at Mayaro. As this could not be realised, the Book Mobile Service was given to the library instead. However, it was suspended in 1974, leaving the community without a library service until April 20th, 1991 when efforts were made to reinstate it, at a cost of over $100,000.

AMOCO (Trinidad) Oil Company and a number of civic minded citizens set about repairing and refurbishing the old Village Hall situated at the Junction of the Mayaro Main Road and Manzanilla Road. Simultaneously, at the request of Mr Meltreahart, Divisional Manager of AMOCO, the library acquired a substantial gift of 14,000 volumes from employees in Canada. This initial collection gave the library a secure basis on which to start a service to its population of 35,000.

Included among Mayaro's population are people from Poole, Rio Claro, Mafeking, Ortoire and Guayaguayare. In addition to providing a functional space, volunteers from within the community gave their time and skills to ensure that the service was initiated. This initial service was given every Saturday between the hours of 10.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. Groups involved in this project included: (a) The Petroleum Women's Club (b) Lion's and Leos Clubs of Mayaro (c) Mayaro Old Boys' Association.

At a formal ceremony on Wednesday 3rd March, 1993 the library was officially handed over to the Central Library of Trinidad and Tobago. Staff was allocated to the library (Librarian I and Library Assistant I) and the opening hours were extended. The library now opens from Tuesday - Friday 8.00 am to 5.00 p.m. and on Saturdays at 8.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon. Together with our lending services, a reference and research service is also provided. The Internet service is in full use at the branch. The library also participates in library competitions. The library also holds workshops and lectures on topical issues and hosts holiday and vacation programmes for the children of the community. Also included in the branch is a special library collection.
