History

The Diego Martin branch Library began in 1991. It was previously known as the Diego Martin Community Library since it was formalized by the Friends of the Library a community group. This group was comprised of then government minister Mr. Kenneth Valley, insurance manager Mr. Jerry Brooks, Mr. Clive Thomas and others.

A building was acquired for the housing of the library and was then renovated to facilitate the needs of a library. A part time librarian was employed, Mrs. Jane Albert and an assistant Ms. Leslie-Ann Teague.

Books were generated by many donations made by the public and businesses. There was a generous supply of reference books, fiction and non-fiction adult and juvenile books. A computer was also donated to the library.

The ministry of the Office of the Prime Minister took over the administration of the library in September 1992. Public servants were employed consisting of an Estate Constable, a Librarian and a Branch Library Assistant.

With the putting in place of full-time staff to man the services to the public, library personnel organized programmes such as Storytime on Saturday mornings, playing of educational games, summer programmes and a youth club for teenagers. Lectures and seminars were also organized which focused on topical issues. Annual calypso and storytelling competitions were also held.

Although the Diego Martin Branch Library is now managed by the government, the Friends of the Diego Martin Library still play a vibrant and pivotal role in supporting the activities of the library. This group assists with fundraising in order to help with needs that the library has from time to time. The "Friends" is now chaired by Mrs. Vere Achong former Director of Library Services.
