History

The Carnegie Free Library was founded in 1919. The original building was renovated during the period 1978 - 1984 by the Ministry of Works. While this renovation was underway, the library was relocated to St. James Street, San Fernando, which was subsequently destroyed by fire November 4th 1984. The Library now occupies two locations, the old Carnegie building which houses Adult Lending, Children's Department, Administration and an Audio Visual Room. A refurbished container at the back of the building houses a bibliographical Department as well as a Bindery. La Pique Plaza houses the General Reference and West Indian Reference sections.

Future Plans

The Library now offers free Internet access to the general public at both Carnegie and La Pique. At present the library houses a separate Adult Lending on the ground floor of the Building at Harris Promenade. A special reading room for adults to peruse the latest periodicals has also been created as well as a separate Young Adult corner and a Paperback corner. Lending services are now being computerised. There are also plans for expansion of the Juvenile Department and plans to expand the Harris Promenade site westwards along the Promenade.
