Land/Slave Deeds

The Land/Slave Deeds
The collection consists of four sets of Land/Slave Deeds, 1768 - 1819. Some are on vellum and some on parchment. These were purchased in the early 1960's from an English antique dealer by the Carnegie Free Library, San Fernando. They were kept in the main vault of the Library until they were transferred to The NALIS headquarters in Port of Spain in the year 2000. In September 2001, they were housed in the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago, where conservation and restorative work was carried out by the staff of the National Archives. The National Archives is at present the custodian of these documents. They have been retained in their original order.

The documents consist of:

Affidavit regarding Indentures of Bargain and Sale and Release by Campbell Mackintosh in the presence of William Inglis Esq. Chief Magistrate;

Indenture of Release to Jacob Wilkinson by James Mackintosh & Harriot Young regarding cotton plantation in Tobago called Rosebank;

Indenture of Lease of another part of Rosebank Estate;

Indenture of Release of Camden Estate in Couva, Trinidad and certification of the number of slaves on the Camden Plantation;

A report on the survey and division of the Neutral Islands (St. Vincent, Dominica and Tobago), Grenada and the Grenadines in the year 1770 and a Plan and description of a parcel of land in one of the Neutral Islands;

Indenture of release of a plantation lot in Sandy Point Division, Tobago.

These documents also show the transfer of slaves from one plantation to another, listing the names, ages and occupation of the slaves to be transferred.
