National Library and
Information System
The Public Library System comprises the three Institutions of The Central Library of Trinidad and Tobago, The Trinidad Public Library and The San Fernando Carnegie Free Library. These Institutions have been integrated in accordance with a Cabinet decision of 1993 which created the National Library and Information System (NALIS).
Legislation creating a new Statutory Body to manage all Government Libraries was passed in 1998
The Headquarters of the Public Library System is at present situated at the Corner of Duke and Pembroke Streets, Port of Spain, where the Adult Lending Library and Childrens' Lending Library are also located.
TheHeritage Library and the Port of Spain General Reference Library are located at Knox Street.
There are two Regional Headquarters, one in San Fernando, in the South of Trinidad, and the other in Scarborough, Tobago.
Branch Libraries exist in the suburbs of Belmont and St.James, rural areas of Arima, Couva, Diego Martin, La Brea, Maloney, Mayaro, Moruga, Point Fortin, Princes Town, Sangre Grande, San Juan, Siparia, and Tunapuna and the Chaguanas Community Library.
Tobago branch libraries are located at Roxborough, Charlotteville and Scarborough. Tobago also has Book Van Schools Services.
Bookmobile services are also provided to the rural areas of Trinidad and Tobago.
The Port of Spain Business Library is a special service of the Reference Library on Knox Street. This service is geared towards corporations, business people, government institutions, managers, accountants and tertiary level students. It provides current and relevant material to the business sector in print and electronic formats.
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES
The major objective of the Public Library System is to provide
and encourage the use of a high quality of service that would inform, educate
and entertain all citizens and so play a key role in the development of
a totally literate society.
To do this the libraries offer information materials on all areas of interest
to all persons for loan or reference, without charge.
