Library Basics

How are the books arranged?
Books in the library are grouped as either fiction or non-fiction. Fiction is arranged in alphabetical order by the author's surname. Non-fiction books are shelved by call number. Since different authors will write about the same topic, the topic is given a number, so that the books on that topic can be shelved together. This number system is known as the Dewey Decimal Classification System.

The Dewey Decimal System organizes information into 10 broad areas, which are broken into smaller and smaller topics. Different topics are assigned numbers, known as "call numbers." For example, "Chemistry " is given the number 540. To see what books the library has on chemistry, go to the non-fiction shelves and find the books that have 540 as part of their call number.

What do I do if I can't remember the author's name?

Simply go to the computer catalogue (called an OPAC) and type in part or all of the title of the book. If you don't remember the title, type in the subject that the book deals with.

If, after this you are still unsure what to do, ask the library staff for assistance.
