Registration

To register as a user of the Port of Spain Adult Library, a valid form of identification, such as ID card, driver's licence or passport, is needed, along with proof of your current address, in the form of a utility bill, dated within the last 3 months.

Once they have registered, patrons will receive a library membership card. This card allows patrons to borrow books, obtain Internet access, scan and photocopy materials, and print from the Internet.

 

Guidelines for Services

  • Two (2) books per person may be borrowed.
  • Books are available for loan from any library except the Heritage Library.
  • Children 10 years and under must be accompanied by an adult, to be allowed entry in the Adult Library. However, children from 11 years old are allowed in the Adult, Young Adult and Heritage Libraries.
  • Children and Young Adults are prohibited from playing computer games in the Adult and Heritage Libraries.
  • Cell phones should be turned off or placed in vibrator mode on entry to the library. Persons should then retreat outside of the library to answer telephone calls.
  • No weapons are allowed on the premises.
  • Do not pull the blinds.
  • Do not move around the furniture or equipment.
  • Patrons are allowed to save files to diskettes. Please ask staff for assistance.
  • Do not plug any appliance into the electrical outlets.
  • A maximum of two (2) persons are allowed at a computer at the same time.
  • Viewing of pornographic sites is not allowed.
  • No bags are allowed in the library. Persons may bring in their handbags, but these should be no larger than 12" x 8". Larger sizes should be checked into a locker. All bags aer subject to search.
  • Bags should not be placed on the floor. Patrons must use lockers, or check bags in the baggage area where they will receive a numbered tag. This tag must be presented in order to collect bags.
  • Any items left in lockers after 6.00 p.m. will be discarded.
  • No eating or drinking is allowed in the library. This includes chewing gum and bottled water.
  • No smoking is permitted on the premises.
  • The National Library and Information System Authority (NALIS) strives to provide an atmosphere conducive to study and quiet reading. We therefore request each person to act in a considerate manner. For this reason, any behaviour that disrupts the orderly use of the library, or which affects the staff's ability to provide an effective service is prohibited.

Disorderly behaviour includes:

  • Disruptive noise
  • Abusive language
  • Threatening behaviour
  • Creating a physically offensive condition that is disturbing
  • Offensive odours
  • Mutilation of books
  • Physical intimacy

Persons in violation of the above will have to leave the premises and have their library membership suspended.

Persons caught willfully trying to leave the library with NALIS's property will be prosecuted, and their membership suspended.

Sexual contact with a minor (children under 16 years) and vandalism are criminal offenses and will be reported to the police.
