NALIS TO HOST PRESERVATION WORKSHOP: "SAVE OUR STUFF"

The National Library and Information System Authority’s (NALIS) Preservation and Conservation (PAC) Laboratory will commemorate its fourth anniversary with the hosting of an extensive, one-day workshop, titled “SOS: Save Our Stuff! - Introduction to the Care and Repair of Books and Documents,” and a week of preservation and conservation activities at the National Library of Trinidad and Tobago, Hart and Abercromby Streets, Port of Spain, from July 10 to July 18, 2017.

The activities, which are mostly free of charge, are intended to provide the public with the information and tools necessary to care for their own precious paper-based family heirlooms and treasured documents, while celebrating the Labs success in prolonging the existence of countless library materials and historical collections.

The workshop, which is one of the Lab’s signature events, will be held on July 14, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. –2:30 p.m. at the 1st Floor Seminar Rm, National Library. Participants will learn theory and hands-on preservation techniques and receive guidance from workshop facilitator Danielle Fraser, Library Conservator and the Head of the PAC Lab.

Other activities scheduled during the week include, a public exhibit, which runs from July 10 - 18; an Interactive Booth on July 10 and July 11; a Family Heirloom Clinic on July 12, at which participants may bring treasured letters, certificates, photos and other paper-based materials and receive expert advice on how to care for their heirlooms; and public tours of the Laboratory on July 13.

For further details or to pre-register for any of the activities, contact 624-4466 ext. 2038 or email fraserd@nalis.gov.tt OR pr.marketing@nalis.gov.tt.

Since its official commissioning on July 8, 2013, the PAC Lab has preserved thousands of the national library’s books, memorabilia from special collections and rare treasures of our nation’s heritage. The PAC Lab also helps NALIS fulfil its role as the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions’ Preservation and Conservation Regional Centre for the English-speaking Caribbean and serves the Heritage Library Division in achieving its mandate to acquire, promote and preserve national heritage material. Additionally, the PAC Lab advises public and private organisations on the care of their collections and artefacts.
