The material covers all subject areas with an emphasis on literature, history, arts and culture, and social sciences. Books, periodicals, government publications, information files, email queries, maps, newspapers, photographs and prints, stamps, calendars, pamphlets, and audio-visual material are included.

Books

The book collection is strong in the subject areas of history, literature, sociology, the arts, culture, adult and children's fiction.

Periodicals

The periodical collection includes scholarly journals as well as newsletters and annual reports of business firms, government departments and quasi-government bodies.

Government Publications

Government Publications include annual reports of the Ministries - the Hansard Report, Reports of Commissions of Enquiry, the Trinidad and Tobago Gazette, Acts, Bills, Legal Notices and the Central Statistical Office publications.

Information Files

Information Files contain newspaper clippings, leaflets, small pamphlets and copies of periodical articles. There are files on subjects, places, associations, and biographies.

Email Queries

Users can also request information via email. Library staff will respond to your query promptly, via email.

Maps

The map collection includes maps of Trinidad and Tobago and other Caribbean countries.

Newspapers

All the Trinidad and Tobago newspapers, both daily and weekly, are acquired.

Photographs and Prints

The collection cotains photographs of people, places and buildings. Other prints include postcards by local artists and drawings of carnival costumes and local flowers.

Stamp collection

This collection contains a selection of First Day Covers.

Calendars

The calendars feature local buildidngs, flora and fauna, famous people, local cuisine, culture, places and indigeneous people. They also include reproductions of paintings by local artists.

Organisation of the Material

The book collection is separated into fiction and non-fiction sequences for adults and children. Non-fiction material is arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme. Fiction is arranged alphabetically by author.

Periodicals are arranged aphabetically by title. Current issues of some journals are displayed. Back issues are bound and arranged chronologically.

Information files are arranged alphabetically by subject and names of places and associations. Biographical files are arranged alphabetically by surnames.

Maps are arranged alphabetically by place.

Newspapers - one copy of each of the daily newspapers e.g. Express, Newsday and Trinidad Guardian - is indexed, clipped and stored in Information Files. another copy is bound monthly. Some of our bound copies have been sent to the National Archives.

Audio-visual Material - our growing collection of audio-visual material is not available to the public at present. However, all attempts are being made to make the necessary facilities available for their use.

Services

Photocopying

Users may request photocopies of printed material at a cost of TT$0.50 (fifty cents) per page, subject to copyright law in force in Trinidad and Tobago.

Internet

Patrons can access the internet for half an hour, free of charge. No email facilities are offered.

Queries

Information can be requested in person, by telephone, fax, or email.

Public Acces Catalogue

The Online Public Access Catalogue provides access to approximately nine thousand (9,000) catalogued items. Included are books, audio cassettes and compact discs acquired sinve 1996. It can be searched by author, title, subject and keyword.

Extension Activities

The library continues to host lectures and demonstrations relevant to various cultural and religious events. The library also holds workshops, quizzes and competitions. In addition, the library participates in outdoor cultural events and mounts displays at various venues.
