1. TRADE, INDUSTRY AND RELATED SERVICES

1.1 How do I get an Import Licence?

The Ministry of Trade and Industry controls importation of restricted goods into Trinidad and Tobago.

Import licences are not necessary for items not on a restricted list, however a specific licence is required for the importation of items on the negative list.

Procedure

(1) Fill out in triplicate, the Import Licence Form which is obtainable at the Ministry. One copy (of the form) will be returned to you.

Submit form with a dollar stamp and walk with proof of identification, your Board of Inland Revenue (BIR) number or the copy of the BIR letter.

(2) Check with the Ministry after a period of three (3) working days to find out whether your application has been approved. Once the application is approved you are required to supply a $10 stamp for the license. The stamps are available at any Post Office.

Do not begin proceedings for importation of goods until your import licence has been approved or you have been assured that the goods are not on the restricted list.

For further information please contact the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Riverside Plaza, Corner of Piccadilly and Besson Streets, Port-of-Spain.
