Due
to queries made to the Division of Consumer Affairs regarding
the registration of a business, the following article has been obtained from
The Registrar General (or The Registrar Of Companies), Companies Section, now
located at South Quay, Port of Spain.
The following steps are outlines to assist consumers who desire to
register a business under the Pursuant to the Registration of Business Names
Act Chap 82:85.
Step 1
Write
a brief letter addressed to the Registrar General (or the Registrar of
Companies Section, 34 Frederick Street, Port of Spain, requesting approval for
the use of the business name desired.
(See
specimen letter).

Please
note that there should be only one name per letter. The letter requesting approval for the name must be brought in
person to the office. (Not posted).
·
Please
collect response in two working weeks, together with the original receipt.
Step 2
After
receiving your approval to use the name, the following documents should be
presented for registration of he business:

The
original approval letter.
·
The
appropriate forms:
For
individuals - Form No. 1
For
partners - Form No. 2
These
forms are available at Horsford Printery, Fraser Street, Port of Spain (off
Tragarete Road), or at Rapid Print, Chacon Street, Port of Spain.
·
Registration
fee is $220 in postage stamps (in denominations of 11 x $20 or 4 x $50 and 1 x
$20).
·
The
Board of Inland Revenue file number of each individual and corporation. This number should be shown on an original
official document from the Board of Inland Revenue by means of any one of the
following:
Assessment
Notice.
BIR
Advisory Letter.
·
A
Certificate of Registration will be ready for collection on presentation of the
original receipt at the end of one week after the filing of the registration
documents.
Please note the following:
·
No
abbreviations must be used in the documents.
·
All
documents must be filed in person together with the appropriate fees and not
sent through the mail.
·
All
changes / corrections must be initialed and dated by all the individuals, all
the partners, or the declarant.
·
All
certificates / approvals must be collected with the original receipts.
