5.1 The Registrar General's Department

How to obtain Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates?

The Registrar General's Department of the Ministry of Legal Affairs in Trinidad and Tobago is responsible for keeping all legal records, including those of births, marriages and deaths.

All births, marriages and deaths should be registered in the district in which they occurred. Every three (3) months, information is sent by the District Registrar to the Warden or Superintendent Registrar, who sends this information to the Registrar General's Office.

When the birth or death is registered the District Registrar would issue a certificate on request. The certificate demanded by schools, Immigration and Licensing Authorities, etc., is that which is issued by the Registrar General's Department. The same applies to a marriage certificate. The addresses of the registration offices are as follows:

Birth Certificate

Fill out the prescribed form with the required information about place and date of birth.

Marriage Certificate

Fill out the prescribed form with the required particulars.

Death Certificate

Fill out the prescribed form with the necessary information about date and place of death.

In all cases a ten dollar ($10) stamp and a two dollars and fifty cents ($2.50) stamp are required for the search fee and another ten dollar ($10.00) stamp and a two dollars and fifty cents (2.50) stamp for the certificate. A search voucher/receipt is issued with a number on production of which the required certificate with corresponding number will be delivered.

All information given should be as accurate as possible. Names should be spelt exactly as they were on the original certificates and dates should be exact. Mistakes in names, addresses and dates can cause delays in obtaining duplicates. Be sure to double-check the information on the application form before handing it in.

Fees: Variable and may depend on the value of the consideration.

5. Receiving and processing applications:

(a) to bring lands under the Real Property Ordinance;

(b) for a Vesting Order;

(c) for lost Certificates of Title or Crown Grants.
