CONSUMER SERVICES

8.1 How to Lodge a consumer complaint?

The Consumer Affairs Division deals with complaints relating to goods and services.

Types of complaints admissible at the Consumer Affairs Division

1. Goods not of merchantable quality.

2. Goods not serving the purpose it originally intended to.

3. Goods not fitting the description given.

4. Unsatisfactory Services.

5. Incorrect Labelling.

Before calling the Consumer Affairs Division, the consumer must return to the business place where the item was purchased and lodge a complaint. If the consumer is not satisfied with the response at the business place, the consumer may then come to the Consumer Affairs Division.

N.B. - Do not leave your receipt at the business place.

Procedure for lodging a complaint

1. Bring to the Consumer Affairs Division the item (provided that it can be carried) as well as original receipts and other pertinent documents, such as hire purchase agreement and warranties. If the item is too large and cumbersome to carry, the Consumer Liaison Officer will come to your home to examine it when the need arises.

2. At the Office the consumer will be interviewed and requested to fill out a complaint form. In cases where a letter of complaint is sent by mail to the Consumer Affairs Division, the consumer will still be required to come in to furnish additional information.

3. During the interview, details of the complaint will be assessed. If the complaint is not legitimate, the consumer will be informed accordingly. If the case is deemed to be valid, a file will be made with the complaint form and duplicates of supporting documents. The Consumer complaint will then be investigated by a Consumer Liaison Officer.

N.B. - There is no surety that the consumer's case is valid until both parties (the consumer and the business person) are interviewed.

The Office of the Consumer Affairs Division is located at Agostini Compound, 3 Duncan Street, Port of Spain.
