QUICK FACTS ON TEACHER STATUS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
STATUS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
At present, teachers are classified according to the undermentioned
groupings upon attainment of the accompanying minimum academic qualifications:-
ASSISTANT TEACHER II
5 O'levels - Mathematics, English and science subject compulsory.
ASSISTANT TEACHER III
5 O'levels including English and Mathematics with CXC General Grades
I or II or GCE Grade A, B, or C and 2 A'level passes (one of which should
be in the particular field).
TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL
TEACHER I
Craftsman's Diploma from National Examinations Council plus two years
post industrial experience.
SPECIAL TEACHER I
Tertiary level education in the related field subject to assessment
by the Ministry of Education, Curriculum Division.
TEACHER I
Assistant Teacher II or Assistant Teacher III may be upgraded to this
position after successful completion of the Teacher's Diploma. For the
secondary level the diploma should include an elective in the particular
field from Teachers' Training College.
TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL
TEACHER II
Technician's Diploma in related field from National Examinations Council
or its equivalent. Three (3) GCE or CXC O'levels, inclusive of English
and Mathematics, will be an asset to the applicant.
SPECIAL TEACHER II
Tertiary level education in the related field subject to assessment
by the Ministry of Education, Curriculum Division.
SPECIAL TEACHER III
Tertiary level education in the related field subject to assessment
by the Ministry of Education, Curriculum Division.
TEACHER II
Recognized degree in the related field from a tertiary level institution.
TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL
TEACHER IV
Technical Vocational Teacher II may be upgraded to this position after
successful completion of the Technical Teacher Training Course.
TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL
TEACHER V / ENGINEER I
Recognized degree in Engineering from a tertiary level institution.
