PATENT INFORMATION & DOCUMENTATION UNIT (PIDU) -
TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION AVAILABLE

PIDU is currently (from August 1994) operated by the Documentation Centre of NIHERST at 155-157 Tragarete Road, Block B, 1^st Floor, Port of Spain (Tel: 622-2267/5891) and offers patent-based technological information services to business persons, commercial enterprises, entrepreneurs, decision makers, inventors, R & D staff, and financial institutions among others.

The following services are presently available:

State-of-the-art searches of the patent documentation conducted by

(a) the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) and/or

(b) the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), through technical assistance agreements.

Access to over 180 "Technology Packages" (see lists issued August 1996) of the results of previous state-of-the-art and technological information searches conducted over the twelve years that PIDU has been in existence. Inquiries may be made by telephone, mail or in person.

Acquisition of specific patents: PIDU can supply copies of patents, quoted in scientific or commercial literature as reference documents, on reimbursement of cost.

Manual access to the Caribbean Patent Database (CARPAT) for the period covered by the bibliographic index, which is extant up to 1991 (date of second issue of the index). Online search facilities are NOT as yet available, but copies of patents in the database are available on request.

Non-patent specialized information e.g., in the field of "appropriate technology" as may be available at or through PIDU.

There is presently no charge for services received from CIPO and WIPO. However, local direct costs, such as charges for photocopying and telefax, are recoverable and will have to be met when incurred.
