Garfield St. Auburn Sobers, was born on July 28, 1936 in Bay Land, St. Michael Parish, Barbados.
Undoubtedly he was the greatest cricket player of his era (1952 to 1974).
In 1998, Barbados declared him a National Hero. Many adjectives have been used to describe him; the great Barbadian cricketer, the greatest all rounder, the cricketer's cricketer, etc.
Sir Garfield Sobers is an international cricket celebrity and a national hero of Barbados. Sir Garfield rose from the back streets to become Captain of the West Indies team and has always been regarded as the world's greatest all-rounder.
Sir Garfield retired from cricket in 1974 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II the following year, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to international cricket.
Sir Garfield Sobers has always been an ambassador for his country and for his sport and continues to receive the respect that he gained on the cricket field.
Certainly, there will be no other like him.
