Geeta Ramsundar, a petite 23-year-old, is a skilful sitarist who was
trained by the Bharatiya Vidya Sansthanaan.
She
also plays the harmonium and reads transcripts from the Ramayan.
Growing
up in the countryside, the dream to pursue a $500,000 medical degree seemed
far-fetched and unreal. However, she
was recently admitted to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of the West
Indies to study for her MMBS degree.
Born
in a humble home at Downing Trace, Moruga Road, Princes Town, Ramsundar said:
"My parents sacrificed to finance my education. There was no way I could have acquired $500,000 to pursue a
medical career."
After
attending Naparima Girls' High School -
where she attained eight distinctions, she went to Princes Town Senior
Comprehensive School for A' Levels. She
excelled.
However,
what is remarkable about Ramsundar is her strong focus on her culture. In addition to her academic qualifications,
Geeta also holds three distinctions in Hindi Varna Bodh, Sargam Vocal, and
Sargam Harmonium.
She
enjoys singing and dancing classical music.
She teaches at the Mayaro Composite School.
