Traditionally many farmers throughout the world delay the application of pesticides until problems begin to manifest themselves. Only then are pesticides applied to obtain rapid control of the pests. This has some significant complications:
We now have the opportunity to both maximize our potential crop yields and effectively control major pests by using some of the new pesticides available. The correct use of these pesticides can allow farmers to improve pest control, reduce time and labour spent on frequent pesticide applications, reduce the potential threats of pesticide residues in our environment and on crops, and increase crop yields which are under less stress associated with high, pest populations.
One of the products that has the potential to be a major component in many crop protection programmes, is Cascade.
Cascade is an exciting new insecticide that acts as an insect growth regulator on many noxious pests associated with agriculture throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
Cascade prevents the young (immature) stages from going through their normal growth (or moulting) stages. When used preventatively Cascade can effectively keep target pest populations to a minimum.
Cascade can control many important pests such as mites, tomato pinworms, diamond-back moth and cabbage loopers on many economic crops such as tomatoes, eggplant, bodi, peppers (hot and sweet), cabbages and ornamental plants.
Cascade can be applied preventatively at a low rate of 5 to 7.5 cc per gallon and is extremely rain-fast (i.e. it stays on the foliage longer for better activity).
Cascade has been undergoing evaluation in Trinidad for some time and has shown excellent control on tomato pinworms and mites in the Aranjuez area.
Work was done with top farmers such as Mr. Popeali, Mr. Ramdial Ramtahal and Mr. Singh.
Successful evaluations were carried out in other farming areas such as Macoya with farmers such as Ramsankar, Smartie and Suresh against pests such as mites and pinworms in crops such as tomatoes and bodi.
This dynamic, versatile insecticide has the excellent properties required to make Cascade one of the most efficient and cost-effective pesticides available to the farming community.
By following the recommended dose rates and application intervals the farmers can achieve economical control of many pests in a manner which minimizes the effects on beneficial insects (including mites) and on our environment making Cascade an important tool in any Integrated Pest Control programme.
